Colombia's Caribbean coats is one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, and one of the cutest, most beautiful creatures who call it home is the cotton-top tamarin. A tiny primate weighing in at a mere 0.5 kg (1 lb), it punches way above its weight when it comes to cuteness. On this 4-day extention to the main Colombia workshop, we will travel north and spend 3 days shooting several habituated tamarin groups. The tamarins are very likely to have twin babies hainging onto them, which pushes the cuteness factor even higher!
This is the perfect little addition to the longer workshop. If you enjoy shooting special, endangered species, this extension is for you.
We are working in collaboration with a special government project, whose goal is conserving the cotton-top tamarins. Through public education and engagement, protection and restoration of forest habitat, creating of community empowerment programs and field research, your money will be used to help ensure that cotton-top tamarins continue to have a future in the wild.
to guarantee the safety and wellbeing of the tamarins, our group size is strictly limited to 4 photographers.
Main Features
- An additional 5 days in Colombia's Caribbean coast.
- Very small group size (max 4) promises exceptional wildlife shooting.
- A collaboration with a local project dedicated to the conservation of cotton-top tamarins. Your money goes to a good cause.
- Private transfers, 2 domestic flights and excellent hotel accommodations in Cartagena's historical center.
- Professional photo guidance by an experienced, award-winning landscape photographer.
Day 1 Flight to Cartagena
We will assemble in Bogota El Dorado Airport, from where we will take a domestic flight to Colombia's Caribbean capital, the beautiful city of Cartagena. We will be taken to our hotel in the city's historical center, have dinner at a local restaurant and discuss the days ahead.
Days 2-4 Shooting the Tamarins
Every day we will have an early breakfast and head out at 6:00-6:30 to reach our shooting location at 7:00-7:30. We will meet our guides and trackers and set out to find the tamarins. Locating a group will not be hard as every group has a collared male. Shooting distace will be as close as 7 meters, as the tamarins are typically mid-canopy dwellers.
We will spend several hours shooting the tamarins in their natural environment, finishing at about 13:30. After lunch, we'll head back to the hotel for some rest and a critique session.
Day 5 Back to Bogota
After breakfast at our hotel, we will take a flight back to Bogota.
Cotton-Top Tamarins
The cotton-top tamarin (Saguinus oedipus) is a small New World monkey weighing less than 0.5 kg (1.1 lb). This New World monkey can live up to 24 years, but most of them die by 13 years. One of the smallest primates, the cotton-top tamarin is easily recognized by the long, white sagittal crest extending from its forehead to its shoulders. The species is found in tropical forest edges and secondary forests in northwestern Colombia, where it is arboreal and diurnal. Its diet includes insects and plant exudates, and it is an important seed disperser in the tropical ecosystem.

The cotton-top tamarin is restricted to a small area of northwest Colombia, between the Cauca and Magdalena Rivers to the south and east, the Atlantic coast to the north, and the Atrato River to the west. They are found exclusively in Colombia; 98% of their habitat has been destroyed. Historically, the entire area was suitable for the cotton-top tamarin, but due to habitat loss through deforestation, it survives in fragmented parks and reserves.

Tamarin Access Rules
Please note that cotton-top tamarins are a critically endangered species. The project we are working with has agreed to allow us access to these delicate animals, but this access is strictly dependent upon abiding to simple yet important rules.
- If the local guide determines that the group is causing the tamarins to become overly nervous, the photo session will be paused or stopped immediately.
- Feeding the tamarins or approaching them too closely is strictly prohibited.
- If any of the guide’s instructions are not followed, the session will be ended.
