This annex to the 'Saga of the Seas' Faroe Islands workshop includes visits to two further, less-visited islands: Mykines and Suðuroy, reachable by helicopter. We will be based in traditional Faroese houses and explore the far reaches of the archipelago by helicopter, by foot and by car.

This annex will not be extreme in any way and the hiking difficulty is similar to that of the main workshop. It is the perfect addendum for photographers eager to acheive a more complete, authentic and wild experience in the Faroe Islands.

Here is a short film by Daniel Haussmann from our scouting trip in the Faroes:

MAIN FEATURES

  • Just the right amount of hiking: not too tough and extremely rewarding
  • Very small group size (max 6) guarantees unparalelled personal attention and the best value for your money
  • Professional photo guidance by an award-winning landscape photographer
  • Traditional accommodations throughout the workshop

ITINERARY

Day 1 Meeting in Vágar

We will meet at the lobby of our hotel (situated 2 minutes away from the airport!) for a late dinner, during which we will get acquainted with the guide and participants and discuss the plans for the days ahead.

Days 2-3 Mykines

Early next morning, after breakfast, we will drive to the airport and hop a short helicopter flight to the island of Mykines. Mykines (pronounced Mee-chee-ness) is the westernmost of the 18 main islands of the Faroe Archipelago. In this time of year it is populated by no more than 10 people, which means that once dropped off by the heli, we'll be utterly alone apart from the odd encounter with a shepherd - if you don't count the sheep, that is.

Sun shines on the wind-stricken grass fields of Mykines
Due to its exposed situation, Mykines experiences rapidly changing weather and amazing light

Since no hostel is open in Mykines this time of year, we'll share a beautiful, 100-year old traditional Faroese house. We will sleep in the same (large) room, but the house is clean, fully equipped, the beds are comfortable and most importantly - it has Wifi!
We will bring our own food and I will cook for you on our stay in Mykines.

During our stay we will hike around the western side of the island. We'll venture all the way to the lighthouse on the far west, about an hour away from our house.

Weather in Mykines is extreme, and we can expect all kinds of light, strong winds, clouds rolling in and out and very unique photographic conditions. Rainbows happen often, appearing and disappearing as the sun peeks between the clouds and shine upon the rain. Get ready to get wet on occasion, but it's going to be very worth it!

Day 4-5 Suðuroy

Once we are finished in Mykines, we'll take the helicopter back to Vagar, and soon afterwards we'll take it again and fly (through several islands) to Suðuroy. Suðuroy is the southernmost of the Faroe Islands. Like its brothers, it is ruled by mountains, cliffs and fjords. It is the island which has the most islets and skerries around it, and the only one with active coal mines. For our two nights here, we'll reside in a wonderful little guesthouse.

Suðuroy is full of wonderful photographic spots, some a short walk from the road and some a short hike away. We'll spend our time here exploring the island and shooting from high vantage points scattered across it.

Day 6 Back to Vágar

After a possible sunrise shoot, we'll pack our things and take a helicopter ride back to Vágar, where we'll settle back in the hotel and continue on the main workshop.

WORKSHOP PRICE INCLUDES

  • Shared accommodation in traditional, local houses (WiFi included!)
  • Full board throughout the stay in Mykines. You will get to taste my world famous cooking! ;)
  • Breakfast and lunch in Vagar and in Suduroy.

  • Entrance fees, road tolls and taxes on all services listed above.

WORKSHOP PRICE DOES NOT INCLUDE

  • Airfare to and from Vágar Airport (FAE).
  • Thermal clothing.
  • Insurance. It is MANDATORY to insure yourself against physical injury, and highly recommended to insure your photo gear. Tour leaders will not be responsible in case of any personal injuries or damage to photographic gear as a result of an accident during the workshop. A good insurance policy can make a big difference should something happen, and ensure a safe return home.
  • Dinners in Vagar and in Suduroy
  • Alcoholic drinks.
  • Non-meal-time snacks.
  • Non-meal-time soft drinks (the Faroe's tap water is fantastic and highly recommended).

WHAT TO BRING

Photography Equipment

  • A digital camera, preferrably a DSLR camera with a full-frame sensor, since these cameras have better low-light capabilities. However, a crop-sensor DSLR will also completely suffice. A compact camera can be used, as long as you understand its limitations.
  • A stable tripod.
  • An ultra wide angle lens. For example, a Canon 16-35mm on a FF sensor camera, or a Nikon 10-24mm on a crop sensor camera.
  • A mid-range zoom lens such as a 24-70mm.
  • A telephoto zoom lens, such as a 70-200 or 70-300 (the longer the better). Doesn't have to have a wide aperture but a stabilizer is recommended.
  • Recommended: A filter set for landscape photography. A good filter set is worth its weight in gold for a landscape enthousiast. If you need to consult about buying a filter set, I'll be happy to help.
  • Recommended: A camera remote.

Clothing

  • Thermal gear is essential. I typically wear a thin thermal base layer, a heavy fleece coat and a down coat.
  • Warm gloves. It's important to use gloves which enable you to operate the camera while wearing them.
  • Water resistant convertible trousers.
  • Thermal long-johns (in case you get cold easily)
  • Thermal socks. I recommend bringing at least 2-3 pairs.
  • A good warm hat which covers your ears.
  • Good, water resistant hiking boots

Other

  • Headlight
